Emery tells Arsenal chiefs he wants to keep Ramsey until the summer

Arsenal boss Unai Emery says he wants to keep Aaron Ramsey until the end of the season.
Ramsey is set to leave the Gunners on a free transfer, with his contract at the Emirates Stadium set to expire in the summer.
Arsenal chiefs pulled a contract offer last year and the Welshman is now evaluating his options, with a number of Europe’s biggest clubs keen to take him abroad.
The 27-year-old is able to sign a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs, and Juventus are understood to be in pole position to land the midfielder.
The Italian champions have reportedly put together a five-year deal to take Ramsey to Turin - with the total package of the deal worth a potential £39million.
“I want him in the present with us,” said Emery on Thursday.
“At the end of the season is the moment he can go to one team or another team.”

Perisic speaks out on Manchester United transfer

Ivan Perisic has admitted he was close to joining Manchester United in the summer.
The Croatia World Cup star was one of the names on Jose Mourinho’s list of potential summer signings, the lack of which largely contributed to the Portuguese’s unhappiness at the club prior to his sacking last month.
Perisic was targeted, along with a central defender, but in the end only Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant arrived at the club.
Mourinho has since been replaced by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on an interim basis, but Perisic spoke of his admiration for the Portuguese boss in the latest edition of Four Four Two magazine.
“It’s true that an offer from Manchester United was on the table and I was close to leaving Inter,” he said.
“But I decided to stay and, as I said, Spalletti’s perseverance to keep me played a big role.
“In football, small details in these situations are key.
“Admiration from a coach like Mourinho is definitely something that flattered me.”

Poch reveals transfer plans

Mauricio Pochettino admits Tottenham have to sell before they can buy.
Boss Pochettino, the only Premier League manager now to add to his squad in the summer window, confessed it will be “impossible” for Spurs to make signings this month too, without making space first.
The north Londoners, pumping fortunes into the construction of a state-of-the-art stadium opening soon on the site of their traditional White Hart Lane home, are keen to offload a string of players including Fernando Llorente, Vincent Janssen, Georges-Kevin Nkoudou, Mousa Dembele and Victor Wanyama.

Morata eyed for La Liga transfer

Alvaro Morata has been offered an escape route from his Chelsea nightmare by Sevilla.
The £58million striker faces a bleak Stamford Bridge future after drawing yet another Premier League blank, this time on Wednesday against struggling Southampton.
Morata has netted just seven times this season, with his last top-flight strike coming on November 4. The club are exploring alternatives and have already had a move for Juventus’ Gonzalo Higuain blocked — Bournemouth marksman Callum Wilson is also in their sights.

Toffees eye Malcom?

Everton could look to revive their interest in Malcom this month.
The Toffees had looked to sign the Brazilian from Bordeaux in the summer but he moved to Barca.
His playing time has been restricted this season and MARCA reports a loan move to Goodison has been explored by the Toffees.
Everton already have Andre Gomes on loan from the Nou Camp and signed Yerry Mina and Lucas Digne on permanent deals.

Stam snaps up old boy Clement

Reading midfielder Pelle Clement has agreed to leave the club and join Eredivisie side PEC Zwolle, who are managed by former Royals boss Jaap Stam.
Clement joined Reading from Ajax in June 2017 and made a total of 29 appearances for the Championship side.
However, the 22-year-old has played just 64 minutes this season after coming off the bench as a first-half substitute in a Carabao Cup win over Birmingham in August.

U's star signs on

Tom Lapslie has signed a two-year contract extension with Colchester, committing himself to the club until 2021.
The 23-year-old youth academy graduate passed 100 Colchester appearances earlier this term with his performances earning the midfielder a fresh deal.
Lapslie joined Colchester as a 15-year-old and admitted he had no hesitation in extending his stay.
It was always my intention to stay here longer, and I’m pleased that the deal is done and dusted,” said Lapslie.
I’m looking forward to a successful second half of the season.”

Blues plotting Anya swoop

Troubled Birmingham are considering a loan for Derby outcast Ikechi Anya.
Anya, 31, has 18 months left on his contract at Pride Park but has not played this term.
The Scotland international can go this month and Championship Brum are interested.
Birmingham are under a transfer embargo from the EFL for breaching Financial Fair Play rules.
But they are allowed to sign one player on loan as long as his wages are less than £10,000-a-week.
Brum boss Garry Monk admitted: “I know the player.
”When you are looking at the list we are looking at it is a difficult one. Every player on the list is of interest.”

Defoe agrees Rangers switch

Rangers have agreed a deal to sign Jermain Defoe on an 18-month loan deal.
The Bournemouth striker will hook up with the Scottish Premiership side at their winter training camp in Tenerife.

Bournemouth eye Clyne

Bournemouth are trying to hijack Cardiff’s move for Liverpool defender Nathaniel Clyne.
Manager Eddie Howe wants to bring ex-Southampton star Clyne, 27, back to the south coast on loan to solve his side’s injury crisis.
The Cherries do not have a fit right-back after club captain Simon Francis and Adam Smith both suffered long-term knee problems.
Cardiff chief Neil Warnock worked with Clyne at Crystal Palace and had been hopeful of tempting the former England international to South Wales.

Pochettino on Bowen

Spurs and Everton have been linked with the 22-year-old.
The first time I heard (about) him was yesterday or before yesterday.
I heard for the first time yesterday this name. It’s like many names that appear in the media - rumours.
There’s many interested in this business. How many players are today in the media that are related with Tottenham, and have been in the past?

Klopp warns Liverpool fans over transfers

Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool fans shouldn’t get used to the type of investment the Reds made in their squad in 2018.
Alisson, Fabinho, Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri arrived at Anfield in the summer for a combined total of around £170m, adding to the £75m purchase of Virgil van Dijk from Southampton last January.
All five players have played important roles as the Reds have soared to the top of the Premier League table, sitting six points clear of second-placed Tottenham ahead of their meeting with Manchester City, who are third, on Thursday.
But Klopp says that the level of investment in the squad won’t be repeated ‘constantly’ in the current and future transfer windows.
“We cannot do that constantly [spending big on players] and we will not do that constantly,” Klopp told Sky Sports .
“The good thing was that, like most things in life, the timing was important.”

Klopp 'would have paid money' to be four points clear of Man City after both fixtures

Getty Images
The Reds remain clear of the champions despite going down 2-1 at the Etihad, a scenario that leaves their manager more than content
Jurgen Klopp says he "would have paid money" to be four points clear of Manchester City in the Premier League after two games against the champions this season.
City ran out 2-1 winners in their meeting at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday, moving them back to within four points of the leaders and inflicting a league defeat on the Reds for the first time this season.
Defeat saw Liverpool ultimately pass up the chance to go 10 clear of City, something that, in the eyes of many, would have effectively ended the hosts' title hopes.
As it was, Leroy Sane's 72nd-minute winner blew the title race open once again, as the German clinched victory after Roberto Firmino had cancelled out Sergio Aguero's emphatic opener.
Nevertheless, Klopp did not want to focus on the negative, adamant he never thought it possible to be clear of City after playing their two regulated Premier League fixtures.
"If someone had told me after both games against Man City that we were four points clear, I would have paid money for it, you cannot believe," Klopp told reporters.
"I didn't think it would be possible. Football is like this. If we win this [match] and are 10 points ahead and from that point win no games, then nothing happens. It's really important we take it game by game.
"If we would have won the title five times in the last 10 years, we would say; '100 percent [we'll win it]'. But we don't have experience in it, so why act like someone who wins all the time?
"We never won it as a team so we want to finish the season as good as possible, and that's alright, we can, we're still in a good position.
"It is all fine for us. Not in the moment, it feels really bad, but it is only a moment. Then we have an opportunity to work on it."
Liverpool looked sharper in midfielder after Fabinho had replaced James Milner in the 57th minute, though Klopp did not feel the Brazilian suited the system he wanted to start the match with.
"System wise it wasn't a real alternative in the beginning and we adapted well after we changed, only because Gini [Georginio Wijnaldum] played really well on the left wing, or half left wing, if you like," Klopp said.
"Hendo [Jordan Henderson] was really impressive, and offensively I think we already had more moments [than City] in the game [before Fabinho came on], that's what we showed the boys at half-time.
"Immediately [after half-time] we were a major threat for them. We came through, passed through, the chance of Sadio [Mane] was great.
Article continues below
"There were others moments when we took the ball and accelerated, not immediately passing, because if you can outplay the counter-press every team in the world struggles, even City.
"We had these moments and sometimes the cross wasn't good enough, or the pass – that happens. It's not about two players [Fabinho and Milner].
"You have to constantly work for momentum. That was the game today. There were a lot of really wild moments, a lot of rusty moments. It was really intense for both teams – they won, we lost, that's how it is sometimes."

Transfer expert makes claim about Man Utd chief Ed Woodward and Spurs owner Daniel Levy

TRANSFER expert Duncan Castles claims Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is a big admirer of Tottenham owner Daniel Levy.

Man Utd chief Ed Woodward is a big fan of Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy

Woodward has admired Mauricio Pochettino since he arrived in English football and started working his magic at Southampton and now Tottenham.
But that admiration turned into a full-blown love affair in August when Spurs thrashed Manchester United 3-0 at the Theatre of Dreams.
**PREDICT FIVE RESULTS AND WIN £25,000 - FREE TO PLAY HERE**
Woodward was struck by the manner of Spurs' win and the brand of football Pochettino's vibrant side produced - the kind that became a thing of the past at United under Jose Mourinho.
Woodward now wants Pochettino to be the next United boss but he’s not the only man at the club he is a big fan of. According to Castles, Woodward has a lot of time for Daniel Levy too.
Such is the admiration United now plan to copy Spurs’ transfer policy by signing the best young players around.
“Once you focus your strategy on picking those gems early at good prices, you’re setting yourself a very hard bar in the current market because nowadays most of the clubs are trying to pick those players up,” Castles told the Transfer Window podcast.
“So Manchester United, and this is probably no coincidence because Ed Woodward is a big admirer of Daniel Levy, they are now thinking: ‘we want to be signing players at age 20, 21, 22 who are going to turn into the top stars in a couple of years time.’
“Manchester United are doing that, Liverpool are thinking about doing it with certain players although they’ve tended to be more experienced in the individuals they’ve bought recently, but they’re still eyeing that market, Chelsea are certainly in that market, Arsenal have always been in that market.”

Pochettino is still the favourite with Ladbrokes to take over at United in time for the start of next season.
Despite Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's stellar star as stand-in boss, the bookies still rate Poch's chances of taking over at 6/4, ahead of the current gaffer (2/1).
Elsewhere, Max Allegri and Zinedine Zidane are 8/1 apiece for the job, while Eddie Howe is the most likely Englishman to find himself in the Old Trafford dugout next season at 16/1.
Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: "Solskjaer may be ticking all the boxes right now but the odds are pointing towards Poch at this stage when it comes to the permanent United gig."

Manchester City 2-1 Liverpool: Premier League player ratings

Leroy Sané and Sergio Agüero were superb for City, giving Virgil van Dijk and the near-awful Dejan Lovren a torrid time

Manchester City

Ederson Had little to do until recovering Mané’s shot from a post. From then was largely a spectator but had to stay alert. 6
Danilo Surprisingly chosen ahead of Kyle Walker he proved feisty for Mané and Robertson along his flank. 6
John Stones Saved a certain goal after mix-up with Ederson and did same again towards the end from Wijnaldum. 7
Vincent Kompany Was booked for two-footed lunge at Salah and lost Firmino too easily for Brazilian’s finish. 4
Aymeric Laporte Guardiola felt forced to play his best centre-back on the left and he struggled at times. Booked. 5
Fernandinho Was in enforcer mode, crashing into challenges and performing the dark arts with delight. 8
David Silva Was anonymous and missed a gilt-edged chance in first half. Has performed better for champions. 5
Bernardo Silva Struggled to get on the ball and offer control but snapped into the tackle and always available. 6
Raheem Sterling The top-scorer was off the pace initially but then engineered the winner with a sweet pass to Sané. 8
Leroy Sané Was as sharp as he can be, frightening the visitors before scoring the finest goal of his City career. 9
Sergio Agüero Willing to dribble and take game to opponents, finding a lethal finish just before the interval. 9
Substitutes: Ilkay Gündogan (for D Silva 65) 6, Kyle Walker (for Laporte 86) 6, Nicolás Otamendi (for Kompany 88) 6.

Liverpool

Alisson Began with a miskick and will be upset at tight angle from which Agüero smashed past him. 4
Trent Alexander-Arnold Might he have gone with Sané’s run for the German’s finish? On plus side: his cross led to Firmino goal. 7
Dejan Lovren Was near-awful throughout. Booked for scything down Agüero and fell asleep for City forward’s strike. 2
Virgil van Dijk The Dutchman was some way below par and might have done more to wake his defence up. 5
Andrew Robertson Looked to join in when could but found Sterling elusive before his touch created side’s goal. 7
Georginio Wijnaldum Spent much of the contest chasing blue shirts and was shown a yellow. Had shot cleared off line. 6
Jordan Henderson Was unable to help his side establish a pattern as the contest largely passed the captain by. 6
James Milner Chased and pressed tirelessly but lacked the true creative schemer’s ability and was replaced. 4
Mohamed Salah Liverpool’s classiest attacker was fluid in patches, under-used in others: should have had greater impact. 6
Roberto Firmino Showed flashes of touch and artistry and was in the correct time and place to equalise. 8
Sadio Mané Hit post and was always a bright runner but should have been found more. Subbed. 6
Substitutes: Fabinho (for Milner 57) 5, Xherdan Shaqiri (for Mané 77) 6, Daniel Sturridge (for Wijnaldum 86 ) 6.

A week after the Jurgen Klopp bombshell that sent shockwaves through Liverpool, the club's

LEWIS STEELE: Midwinter sun beamed down on Kirkby as Liverpool's players and staff arrived at their training base for a Friday just like any other. They had no idea that they were arriving for one of the most memorable days in the club's 132-year history. Everyone associated with Liverpool will always remember where they were when Jurgen Klopp's departure was announced. Unlike most news stories in football which leak out weeks in advance from gossipy agents, this was the bombshell that shocked football. It was the best-kept secret in sport and sent shockwaves through the game, the sort of news that had even non-football fans talking about it. Even Liverpool's players were not made aware of the news until called to a team meeting around 10.15am on Friday.

JEFF POWELL: Tyson Fury's undisputed clash with Oleksandr Usyk being postponed blows a £158m hole in the richest fight in boxing history... but there is NO CHANCE the Gypsy King is running scared

JEFF POWELL: Eyebrows will be raised in some quarters as sharply as the cut which has forced the postponement of the Gypsy King's fight with Oleksandr Usyk in Riyadh for the undisputed world heavyweight championship. This gaping gash above Fury's right eye has also blown a $200m (£158m) hole in the richest prizefight in boxing history. This grievous disappointment comes against a background of inaccurate speculation that Fury has been knocked heavily down in sparring while still in the flabby shape which saw him floored by UFC legend Francis Ngannou in Saudi Arabia before scraping the narrowest of decisions.

Jonathan Morgan has left his role as manager of Sheffield United just a week after the Football Association opened a fresh investigation into the death of one of his players, Maddy Cusack.

The former England captain was relieved of his duties by the Championship club after just 83 days in charge, having won only two of his 15 games at the helm.

The Scottish Premiership side is keen to take their time with their appointment in the wake of this week's sacking of Barry Robson, following a tepid 1-1 draw on Tuesday against Dundee at Pittodrie.

Is this the moment Tyson Fury suffered 'freak cut in sparring that needed 15 stitches' and has POSTPONED Gypsy King's unification bout with Oleksandr Usyk in Saudi Arabia?

Boxing fans are wondering whether this is the moment that caused the 'freak' cut above Tyson Fury's eye, leading to the postponement of his heavayweight unification contest against Oleksandr Usyk. Fury stunned the sport when it was revealed he suffered a severe laceration above his right eye will suffering in sparring, making him unfit to compete on February 17 as planned.   A devastated Fury apologised to Usyk and his team before grainy footage from sparring surfaced online, claiming to show the decisive hit the Gypsy King took which bust his eye.

Tyson Fury has insisted that Oleksandr Usyk would have been 'in trouble' as he shares an image of his toned physique following the postponement of his much-anticipated unification bout.

Speaking on Fury's injury, veteran cutman Jorge Capetillo noted he will need an extended break to allow the laceration to heal before returning to sparring.

The heavyweight unification bout between Fury and Usyk had been set to take place on February 17. However, the fight has now been postponed.

IAN HERBERT IN MARSEILLE: All you need in life is an opportunity. it's up to us to take it,' Andy Farrell declared on Friday night, before sending three debutants out to play in a nation where Ireland had won only three times this century. They heeded his words - and none more than the brilliant young fly-half in whom he had invested so much belief. Jack Crowley was the architect of a performance which will live long in the memory and which tells us that this side are the ones to beat in the tournament which lies ahead. Joe McCarthy, in the second row, delivered in abundance, too.

His return from injury served to energise the Spurs crowd against Brentford on Wednesday, a night when he became embroiled in a bizarre dispute with Neal Maupay about darts mimes, which spilled on to social media and rumbled into the night.

From agony to ecstasy! Kylian Mbappe shrugs off shock penalty miss to guide PSG to victory with his 20th Ligue 1 goal of the season - and he even teed up Marco Asensio to score in 2-1 win

Kylian Mbappe scored his 20th Ligue 1 goal of the season after shrugging off his missed penalty to down Strasbourg.  The generational talent rarely puts a foot wrong but he was left red faced when his penalty in the seventh minute was saved by Alaa Bellaarouch, who was making his Ligue 1 debut for Strasbourg.  Mbappe looked at his team-mates in disbelief but perhaps surprise should not have been etched across all of their faces.

ISABEL BALDWIN AT MAYAKOBA, MEXICO: Jon Rahm opted to name his LIV Golf team after Legion XIII, the Roman Empire unit which crossed the Rubicon under Julius Caesar. It was a fitting namesake because on Friday, Rahm crossed his own Rubicon. As soon as the Masters champion teed it up in Mayakoba on Friday, his life on LIV's side of the civil war began and the point of no return to the PGA Tour was officially passed. Rahm, 29, had confessed his $500million LIV Golf defection was a 'big risk to take' ahead of his debut in Mexico earlier this week. But on Friday, the gamble looked to have paid off. The Spaniard made a fast start to life with LIV that rewarded both his and the breakaway's big money moves within just one hole.

Dressed in a casual, all-black outfit, the England star was then seen strolling out of the shop before hopping in his luxurious car and heading off. Jude Bellingham and Mason Greenwood could've been Man United and England team-mates... but

It was an unlikely prospect anyway, but the chances of Jude Bellingham and Mason Greenwood being pals now stand at zero. In an extraordinary moment, Bellingham appeared to mouth the word 'rapist' to Greenwood after putting in a crunching tackle on him during Thursday night's Getafe vs Real Madrid clash. Clips of the incident immediately went viral on social media and forensic lip-reader Jeremy Freeman had told Mail Sport he's '97 per cent confident' Bellingham did mutter the offensive term.

KIERAN GILL: FIFA were dragged in to help fix the mess as they investigated the cock-ups and granted approval so that Fornals and Benrahma could sign on Friday.

AADAM PATEL: Jordan Henderson is finally set to make his Ajax debut against their fierce rivals PSV... his arrival from Saudi Arabia has caused a commotion and though it goes against their traditions, the club desperately needs his experience

AADAM PATEL: Owned by Ajax, De Toekomst means 'The Future' and with its nine football pitches (and two more to come), it is where the likes of Dennis Bergkamp, Patrick Kluivert, Edwin Van der Sar, Luis Suarez , Zlatan Ibrahimovic and many more illustrious footballing names have all passed through in their careers. Across the training ground and inside the stadium, the phrase 'Ajax for the future' is emblazoned in red and white. Almost as if there is an official acceptance from the marketing department too that the four-time European Cup winners are just a feeder club. The reality is that promising players come to Ajax, develop and are then offloaded to the riches of the Premier League and that is precisely why the signing of Jordan Henderson on a two-and-half-year deal worth £120K per week has caused such a commotion in these parts.

Who is the biggest winner from the January transfer window? Ian Ladyman and Sami Mokbel

This January transfer window may have been one of the quietest we've ever witnessed.  With clubs unwilling to stretch themselves due to the pressures of the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules, it was, compared to previous years, rather slow.  Despite that, several clubs did make some moves in the market with Aston Villa notably sealing a £15million deadline day deal for Middlesbrough's Morgan Rogers, while West Ham completed a loan deal for Man City's Kalvin Phillips.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has joked Oleksandr Zinchenko and Ben White have been 'living together and sharing wives' after their on pitch row against Nottingham Forest.

Lewis Hamilton has always admired Michael Schumacher, but he has NOT tried to emulate him

The comparisions started as soon as rumours began to bubble over that the saga that Mail Sport began reporting on last May might come to a bombshell shock conclusion. Lewis Hamilton is set to see out his heavily decorated career at Ferrari, the very constructor where the only driver to match the Briton's excellence in the sport - Michael Schumacher - saw reached the pinnacle of his time in Formula One. The German seven-time world champion may have ended his career in reverse, with Hamilton the one to take over his seat at Mercedes, but Schumacher remains permanently painted Ferrari red, having won five of his titles with the Prancing Horse.

After two challenging years at Mercedes Hamilton undoubtedly will be moving for a fresh start. And wins. Lots of them. But whether Hamilton will be able to achieve that at Ferrari is another matter.

Hamilton stunned the sporting world on Thursday when news broke that he would trade Mercedes - the team he has been with for 11 seasons - for the Italian powerhouses.

Premier League clubs have shelled out a whopping £3.7BILLION in winter windows since

The 2024 January transfer window may have been the quietest one in recent memory - but that's not to say that Premier League clubs don't splash out in the winter months. Since the inception of the Premier League in 1992, 51 clubs have featured in England's top flight and have bought and sold players to improve their squads during that time. The winter window is traditionally a lot slower than its summer counterpart given that clubs are more often to stick with their squads and make adjustments in the off-season. But data collected by Mail Sport reveals that Premier League clubs have still shelled out a staggering £3.7billion in the winter months alone in a 32-year period.

CHRIS WHEELER: Anthony Martial's 10-week lay-off following groin surgery means United are down to one recognised striker in Rasmus Hojlund for the rest of the season. Ten Hag knows United will have to be 'creative' with players like Marcus Rashford, Omari Forson and Amad Diallo to fill the gap, having accepted that his hands were tied by FFP.
